The Captives of Karbala
Sayeda Zainab is the granddaughter of the Prophet, daughter of Sayeda Fatimah and Imam Ali and the sister of Imam Hussain. Zainab accompanied her brother Imam Hussain to Karbala and after his tragic death there, she was instrumental in saving the life of Imam Ali Zayn al-Abidin and the remaining children of the holy household. Her bravery at the battle of Karbala earned her the title “the heroine of Karbala.”
The first assembly commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain is said to have been held by Zaynab in prison. In Damascus, she is reported to have delivered a touching and defiant sermon in the court of Yazid in which she humiliated Yazid and exposed his army’s atrocities while honouring the Ahl al-Bayt and those killed alongside imam Hussain and presenting the eternal consequences of the battle of Karbala.
