The Letters of Support
Here is Imam Hussain alongside Muslim ibn Aqeel, a skilled warrior, whose father, Aqeel, was a brother to Imam Ali. This made Imam Hussain and Muslim cousins.
Imam Hussain has just received tens of thousands of letters from the people of Kufa urging him to save them from the tyranny of Yazid’s regime. In one letter, petitioners plead, “We invite you to come to Kufa as we have no Imam to guide us. Through you Allah will unite us on the path of truth.”
Imam Hussain is assigning Muslim as an envoy to visit Kufa in order to assess the situation on the ground.
Having examined Kufan society, Muslim reported back to Imam Hussain with a letter confirming the loyalty of its people. What he didn’t know was that the thirty thousand followers he had attracted would soon betray him in exchange for their livelihoods. Muslim was executed by the newly installed governor, Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, just a month before Ashura. He is buried in the Great Mosque of Kufa.
